Deep, dark red with purple tints; there are pencil-shavings aromas, overlying earthy graphite and sooty black fruit aromas, the palate deep and wide, generous and ample with a slight lack of shape in its profile. Very good, though, and will reward long-term aging. 28 Sep 2024 Drink 2024–2044

The Eisenstone McDonald Vineyard Shiraz SV904 from Barossa Valley is an exceptional single-vineyard wine, crafted to highlight the unique terroir of one of the Barossa’s most revered sites. Produced by Eisenstone Wines and winemaker Stephen Cook, this Shiraz reflects the brand’s commitment to crafting premium, site-specific expressions of Barossa Valley Shiraz.

The McDonald Vineyard, located in the southern Barossa, benefits from a combination of deep clay soils and the region’s warm climate, conditions that produce Shiraz with powerful fruit concentration and structured tannins. The SV904 designation refers to the specific vineyard block and vintage, emphasizing Eisenstone's focus on precision and terroir.

Hand-harvested grapes undergo fermentation in small, open-top fermenters to maximize flavor and tannin integration. The wine is then matured in French oak barrels, with a portion of new oak used to add complexity and finesse without overpowering the fruit.

In the glass, this Shiraz displays a deep ruby color with purple highlights. The nose is bold and expressive, offering aromas of blackberry, black cherry, and plum, layered with notes of vanilla, spice, and a touch of dark chocolate.

On the palate, the McDonald Vineyard Shiraz is full-bodied and luxurious, showcasing flavors of ripe dark fruits, licorice, and subtle smoky oak. Silky tannins and a balanced acidity frame the wine, leading to a long and complex finish with lingering spice and fruit notes.

This Shiraz pairs beautifully with hearty dishes such as braised beef, lamb shanks, or slow-cooked stews. With its robust structure and depth, it is also an excellent candidate for cellaring, capable of evolving gracefully over 15-20 years.
