Fattoria Le Pupille Morellino di Scansano is a vibrant, medium-bodied red from coastal southern Tuscany, made primarily from Sangiovese with a small addition of Merlot. This wine is a hallmark of the Maremma region — sun-soaked yet fresh, easy to enjoy but far from simple. It comes from the estate founded by Elisabetta Geppetti, a pioneering figure who has been instrumental in raising the profile of Morellino di Scansano since the 1980s.

The grapes are grown in gently rolling hills near Grosseto, where maritime breezes temper the warmth and help preserve acidity. Fermentation takes place in stainless steel to retain purity and freshness, followed by a short period in large oak casks and stainless steel for added softness and polish. The result is a red that combines juicy fruit, soft tannins and a distinctly Mediterranean character.

In the glass, it opens with aromas of ripe cherry, red plum, wild herbs and a hint of spice. The palate is supple and balanced, with flavours of sour cherry, pomegranate, sweet tobacco and a touch of savoury earth. There’s lift and freshness through the finish, making it ideal for food and perfect for drinking young.

Food pairing: ideal with pasta ragù, grilled sausages, pizza with mushrooms and pecorino, or roast chicken with herbs. Also great with Pecorino Toscano or a wedge of aged parmesan.

Cellar potential: best enjoyed within 3 to 6 years of vintage for freshness and vibrancy, though it can develop soft leather and spice with short-term ageing.
