2022 Fontodi Case Via Syrah Colli Toscana, Tuscany

Syrah may not be the first grape that comes to mind in Tuscany, yet in the right hands and the right place it can produce wines of remarkable character. The Manetti family recognised that potential in the elevated vineyards surrounding Case Via, where cooler conditions and careful site selection allow Syrah to express both richness and perfume. The result is a wine that feels distinctly Tuscan while retaining the spice and savoury complexity that make Syrah such a compelling variety.

Best known for their world class Sangiovese, Fontodi has never been afraid to explore the possibilities of their vineyards beyond tradition. Under the guidance of Giovanni Manetti, the estate has earned international acclaim for wines that combine meticulous organic farming with a deep respect for terroir. Case Via reflects that philosophy, offering a more intimate and experimental side of one of Tuscany's great estates.

Deep ruby purple in colour, the bouquet is immediately captivating, revealing aromas of blackberry, plum and black cherry layered with violet, cracked pepper and exotic spice. As the wine opens, hints of olive tapenade, smoked meat and dark chocolate emerge, adding complexity and unmistakable Syrah character. The palate is generous yet beautifully composed, delivering dark berry fruits wrapped around fine tannins and vibrant acidity. There is wonderful energy beneath the richness, while the finish lingers with savoury spice, floral notes and mineral detail.

This is a superb match for rosemary roasted lamb, grilled bistecca, venison with juniper, mushroom pappardelle or chargrilled eggplant with herbs and pecorino. Already highly expressive, it also has the structure and balance to reward careful cellaring over the next decade and beyond.
