From a sandy, elevated corner of Châteauneuf du Pape, Piedlong consistently shows a more refined, perfumed side of the region, and the Brunier brothers lean into that beautifully. Better known for Vieux Télégraphe, Frédéric and Daniel Brunier treat this site with the same respect, allowing Grenache grown on these lighter soils to express finesse, spice and detail rather than sheer power.
The 2022 vintage brings a little more warmth and generosity than cooler years, but it remains beautifully balanced. Aromatics open with ripe red cherry, raspberry and strawberry, layered with hints of plum. There is a lifted floral note, rose petal and violet, alongside classic Rhône garrigue, thyme, rosemary and a touch of spice.
On the palate it is medium to full bodied with a silky, flowing texture. The fruit is generous but not heavy, supported by fine, supple tannins and a line of freshness that keeps everything in check. Flavours move into more savoury territory, dried herbs, spice and a faint earthy note, finishing long and harmonious with a gentle mineral edge.
Winemaking is handled with a light, traditional touch, allowing the vineyard to lead while oak provides subtle structure and integration. The result is a Châteauneuf du Pape that feels both expressive and composed, with a real sense of place.
This is where it gets fun at the table. Classic lamb with garlic and rosemary works beautifully, but it also shines with dishes like duck with figs, grilled pork with fennel and chilli, or even a slow cooked beef and olive stew. For vegetarian options, try a smoky eggplant and tomato bake, chickpea and harissa stew, or roasted root vegetables with herbs and olive oil, the wine’s spice and savoury notes lock in perfectly.
Already drinking with plenty of appeal, it will continue to evolve over the next eight to twelve years, developing more complex notes of leather, dried herbs and spice.
