Piedlong comes from a distinctive corner of Châteauneuf du Pape, a sandy, slightly elevated site that the Brunier family has long championed for its ability to deliver finesse over sheer weight. Known for their work at Vieux Télégraphe, Frédéric and Daniel Brunier bring the same thoughtful, site driven approach here, letting Grenache from these lighter soils show a more perfumed, finely detailed side of the appellation.
The 2023 vintage is beautifully expressive. Aromatics open with red cherry, raspberry and wild strawberry, layered with rose petal and a gentle spice lift. There is a classic Rhône thread of dried herbs, thyme and garrigue, along with a subtle earthy note that gives the wine depth without heaviness.
On the palate it sits in that sweet spot between medium and full bodied, with silky, well defined tannins and a line of freshness that keeps everything poised. The fruit is vibrant and flowing, moving into more savoury territory with hints of spice, dried herbs and a faint mineral edge on a long, graceful finish. It feels elegant and precise, a more lifted take on Châteauneuf du Pape.
Winemaking is handled with restraint, allowing the vineyard to lead while oak plays a supporting role, building texture and complexity without masking the fruit.
This is a brilliant food wine. Lamb with rosemary and garlic is a natural fit, but it also shines with dishes like duck with a spiced cherry glaze, grilled pork with fennel and herbs, or a Provençal style vegetable tian. For vegetarian options, try a slow cooked ratatouille, roasted eggplant with herbs and olive oil, or a lentil and tomato dish with plenty of spice, the wine’s savoury, herbal notes tie in beautifully.
It is already drinking with real charm, but will continue to evolve over the next eight to twelve years, gaining more savoury depth and complexity while holding its balance.
