Lively, detailed floral and white fruit aromas with crisp apple and citrus with a hint of smoky flint. Etched on the palate in pithy phenolics are clean, subtle but crystalline flavours with a strong streak of chalky minerality. Fromm Winery, established in 1992 by Swiss founder Georg Fromm, has built a strong reputation for crafting premium organic wines with a focus on minimal intervention and sustainable vineyard practices. With a dedication to expressing purity and balance, Fromm’s Chardonnay is a standout example of Marlborough’s evolving style beyond its famed Sauvignon Blanc.
Winemaker Hätsch Kalberer, who has been with Fromm since its inception, applies a restrained approach to Chardonnay, allowing the fruit to shine without excessive oak influence. Sourced from organically farmed vineyards, the grapes benefit from Marlborough’s cool climate, long sunshine hours, and well-drained alluvial soils, which contribute to the wine’s bright acidity, layered complexity, and mineral backbone.
In the glass, Fromm Chardonnay presents a pale gold hue with a slight green tinge. The nose is elegant and inviting, offering aromas of white peach, nectarine, and citrus blossom, complemented by subtle notes of toasted almond, flint, and a hint of brioche from extended lees aging. On the palate, the wine is finely structured with a balance of ripe stone fruit, lemon curd, and a delicate saline minerality. Gentle oak influence adds depth and texture without overpowering the fresh fruit character. A crisp, persistent finish leaves lingering notes of citrus zest and subtle spice.
This organic Chardonnay pairs beautifully with seared scallops, grilled white fish, roast chicken with lemon and thyme, or creamy risottos. Its bright acidity and mineral complexity also make it an excellent match for soft cheeses like Brie or fresh goat’s cheese. Enjoyable in its youth for its vibrancy and purity, it also has the potential to develop further complexity over the next 5–7 years.
