Geoff Merrill Reserve Chardonnay is a bold, confident expression of this classic white grape, blending fruit from both McLaren Vale and Coonawarra—two regions more famous for reds, but quietly capable of producing stellar Chardonnay when the conditions are right. Merrill, a winemaking legend known for his laid-back attitude and precision in the winery, brings serious pedigree and character to this reserve release.
The fruit is sourced from mature vineyards in McLaren Vale, which brings richness and stone fruit depth, and Coonawarra, which adds brightness, acidity, and that subtle flinty edge. Fermentation and aging in French oak, with regular lees stirring, gives the wine a creamy, layered texture without overpowering freshness.
It opens with ripe nectarine, yellow peach, grilled citrus, and toasty oak. Underneath, there’s a thread of cashew, vanilla and struck match that adds complexity without shouting. The palate is generous but beautifully balanced—textural and full-flavoured, with a mineral backbone and just the right squeeze of acidity to keep things tight and energetic.
This is Chardonnay for roast chicken with tarragon, lobster rolls, buttery polenta, or even richer vegetarian fare like pumpkin ravioli. It’s also built to evolve, gaining more savoury notes and nutty depth with a few years in the cellar.
