Half new wood and 40% whole bunch. Bright ruby purple. Little bouquet as yet, and the samples are cold. At the moment the density of the wine shows more than the subtlety, though I think that the detail is certainly there. More in red fruit than black. Drink from 2032-2038.

Impeccably well-balanced finale. Good stuff that is at once refined and powerful.

Gérard Julien Échezeaux Grand Cru is a rare and quietly powerful Burgundy from one of the Côte de Nuits’ more under-the-radar producers. Based in Comblanchien, the Julien family has been making wine for generations, but in recent years has taken a leap forward in quality under the direction of Gérard’s son, Etienne Julien. Their style balances traditional Côte de Nuits depth with a modern sense of elegance and purity.

Échezeaux is one of Vosne-Romanée’s legendary Grand Cru vineyards, known for its ability to produce wines with both sensuality and structure. The Juliens’ parcel sits in the lieu-dit of Les Rouges du Bas, where clay-limestone soils and eastern exposure produce fruit of concentration and aromatic lift.

The winemaking here is focused and respectful. Grapes are hand-harvested and vinified with partial whole bunch, depending on the vintage. Fermentation is natural, ageing is in fine-grained French oak (with a restrained use of new barrels), and no fining or filtration is used.

This Échezeaux opens with heady aromas of black cherry, violet, rose petal, earthy spice and forest floor. The palate is deep and structured, with silky yet firm tannins, vibrant acidity, and a core of dark berry fruit wrapped in spice and savoury mineral detail. It’s Grand Cru in every sense: complex, layered and built to age gracefully over 15 to 20 years.

Serve with duck breast and cherry jus, venison with wild mushrooms, or even a truffled risotto for a luxurious vegetarian match.
