The 2022 Uhlen Blaufüsser Lay GG shows a juicy pineapple aroma on the nose, plus piquant slate spices like notes of smoke and iodine, plus lime zest. Creamy and elegantly textured with fine acidity and tannin structure, the Blaufüsser Lay reveals a good, dense and tightening finish. Discreet Burgundian impression. It is slightly bitter but more savory than drying, and it has =very good length. Tasted as a sample at the Vorpremiere VDP.Grosses Gewächs in Wiesbaden in August 2023.

Heymann-Löwenstein Uhlen Blaufüsser Lay Grosses Gewächs is a masterclass in terroir expression from one of the Mosel's most daring and philosophical winemakers, Reinhard Löwenstein. Known for his uncompromising pursuit of complexity, texture, and depth in dry Riesling, Löwenstein crafts this wine from a specific section of the Uhlen vineyard—Blaufüsser Lay—named after its distinctive blue-grey slate soils.

These ancient Devonian slates give the wine a cool, stony tension that contrasts beautifully with the ripe fruit and wild herbal nuances characteristic of Heymann-Löwenstein’s style. The vines are grown on dangerously steep terraces overlooking the Mosel River, farmed organically and harvested by hand with fastidious attention to detail. Spontaneous fermentation in large old barrels and extended lees aging contribute to the wine's profound texture and aromatic complexity.

In the glass, Uhlen Blaufüsser Lay GG is smoky, structured, and quietly intense. You get layers of crushed slate, white peach, Meyer lemon, verbena, and hints of wild mint. The palate is powerful yet elegant, driven by chalky minerality and vivid natural acidity. There's a quiet grandeur to this wine—less flamboyant than Roth Lay, more contemplative and finely etched.

Best enjoyed with grilled sea bass, roast chicken with preserved lemon, or Alpine cheeses, it will evolve beautifully over 10 to 20 years, gaining savoury, nutty, and smoky complexity with time.
