The 2022 Uhlen Laubach GG opens with a clear, deep, slate-spicy nose of iodine and ripe, intense and concentrated fruit. In the mouth, it is balanced, elegant, soft and lush, with fine, salty and spicy acidity. It has a slate-spicy finish with good intensity and length. Tasted as a sample at the Vorpremiere VDP.Grosses Gewächs in Wiesbaden in August 2023.

Heymann-Löwenstein Uhlen Laubach Riesling Grosses Gewächs is a profound expression of Mosel terroir from one of Germany’s most intellectually rigorous and quality-driven estates. Crafted by Reinhard Löwenstein, a pioneer of dry Riesling in the Mosel, this Grosses Gewächs hails from a distinct parcel within the famed Uhlen vineyard—Laubach—characterised by its pale, limestone-rich slate soils.
Laubach’s unique geology lends this wine a strikingly different profile compared to its Uhlen siblings. Where Roth Lay offers power and exoticism, and Blaufüsser Lay delivers precision and stone, Laubach brings elegance, chalky lift, and a sense of quiet refinement. These are some of the oldest vines in the estate, farmed organically on perilously steep slopes that tumble down toward the Mosel River, all harvested by hand and vinified with indigenous yeasts in old wooden barrels.
The wine itself is breathtaking. Aromas of white flowers, yuzu, crushed oyster shell, and grapefruit zest lead into a palate that is pure tension and grace. There’s a saline line running through it, with tight acidity, subtle phenolics, and a chalk-dust minerality that builds and lingers. It's a Riesling that speaks softly but leaves a lasting impression.
Ageing potential is significant, easily 15–20 years, with the wine gaining layered honeyed, smoky, and herbal dimensions over time. Pair it with sashimi, poached lobster, or a truffled chicken dish to highlight its finesse.
