The patriarch of this highly successful wine business, Jim Barry, died in 2004, but the business continues under the active management of several of his many children, led by the irrepressible Peter Barry. The ultra-premium release is The Armagh Shiraz, with the McCrae Wood red wines not far behind. Jim Barry Wines is able to draw upon mature Clare Valley vineyards, plus a small holding in Coonawarra. After studying and travelling, third-generation winemaker Tom and commercial manager Sam Barry have joined the business, launching The Barry Bros label. In November 2016, Jim Barry Wines released the first commercial Assyrtiko grown and made in Australia.

Jim Barry Wines is a founding member of Australia's First Families of Wine.

Jim Barry The Lodge Hill Shiraz from Clare Valley is a bold and expressive red that beautifully reflects the unique characteristics of this renowned South Australian region. Clare Valley, known for its cool climate and high-altitude vineyards, provides the perfect environment for Shiraz, allowing the grapes to develop rich, concentrated flavors while maintaining vibrant acidity. Jim Barry, a family-owned winery with a legacy of crafting exceptional wines, has long been a pioneer in the Clare Valley, and The Lodge Hill Shiraz is a testament to their commitment to quality.

The fruit for this Shiraz comes from the Lodge Hill vineyard, located at a high altitude, where the cooler temperatures allow the Shiraz to ripen slowly, preserving its freshness and balancing the rich fruit flavors with acidity. Winemaker Peter Barry oversees the production of this wine, ensuring that the fruit’s natural character shines through. The Shiraz is aged in a combination of French and American oak barrels, which enhances its complexity while allowing the purity of the fruit to remain at the forefront.

A deep, dark color, a sign of its full-bodied nature. On the nose, it offers a powerful bouquet of ripe blackberries, plums, and black cherries, complemented by subtle spice, black pepper, and a hint of smoky oak. There’s also a touch of earthiness and a slight herbal quality, adding depth and intrigue. On the palate, the wine is rich and full, with smooth, velvety tannins and a vibrant acidity that gives it structure and balance. The fruit flavors are concentrated, with dark berries leading the way, while nuances of chocolate, spice, and a touch of licorice add complexity. The finish is long and satisfying, with the fruit and oak harmonizing beautifully.

An excellent match for a wide range of hearty dishes. It pairs wonderfully with roasted meats, such as lamb, beef, or grilled steaks, as well as rich pasta dishes like spaghetti Bolognese or slow-cooked beef stew. It also complements aged cheeses like cheddar or Gruyère, making it a versatile wine for different occasions. Whether enjoyed now or cellared for a few years, this Shiraz offers both immediate pleasure and the potential to develop further complexity over time.
