Koomilya JC Block Shiraz from McLaren Vale is a powerhouse of depth, structure, and pure terroir expression, crafted by winemaker Stephen Pannell. Koomilya is the realization of Pannell’s lifelong obsession with McLaren Vale’s ancient soils and old-vine Shiraz. The JC Block, named after Jimmy Carr, the vineyard’s longtime caretaker, sits on one of the region’s oldest sites, with vines that dig deep into ironstone-rich soils, producing a Shiraz of incredible intensity, minerality, and longevity.
Deep, almost opaque purple in color, this wine exudes complexity from the first swirl. Aromas of ripe blackberry, dark plum, and black cherry leap from the glass, followed by layers of roasted coffee, black olive, and crushed violets. There’s an earthy, almost ferrous quality—a signature of the vineyard—accompanied by subtle notes of licorice, cigar box, and dried herbs. The palate is bold yet finely detailed, delivering waves of black fruit, bitter chocolate, and exotic spice, all wrapped in finely structured tannins and a core of vibrant acidity that keeps everything fresh and focused. A long, brooding finish lingers with hints of black pepper, graphite, and ironstone, giving the wine an unmistakable sense of place.
This is a Shiraz built for serious food. It sings alongside slow-cooked lamb shoulder, grilled ribeye with pepper sauce, and smoked brisket. For something a little different, try it with rich mushroom dishes or a truffle-infused risotto—the earthy depth of both the wine and food work in perfect harmony. While seductive now, this wine is just getting started. It has the bones to age for 15–20 years, slowly evolving into a more savoury, gamey, and profoundly complex expression of McLaren Vale Shiraz.
Koomilya JC Block Shiraz is a wine of power, finesse, and authenticity—an untamed yet perfectly balanced McLaren Vale classic from one of Australia’s most visionary winemakers. It’s the kind of bottle you open for a special occasion, or just because you feel like drinking something truly remarkable.
