Moulin à Vent is often called the king of Beaujolais crus, and Château des Jacques is one of its great addresses. Owned by Maison Louis Jadot since the late 1990s, the estate has been instrumental in showing just how serious Gamay can be when treated with a Burgundy mindset. Vineyard parcels are farmed meticulously, many on manganese rich granite soils, and the winemaking leans toward destemming and traditional fermentation rather than full carbonic, building structure and ageability.
There is immediate depth here, dark cherry and blackberry sitting alongside more lifted notes of violet and peony. A savoury layer follows, spice, a hint of earth and a touch of graphite, giving the wine a more serious tone than most Beaujolais. Oak is used with restraint, adding subtle polish without masking the fruit.
The palate is where Moulin à Vent really shows its stature. Medium to full bodied for Gamay, with fine but firm tannins that give shape and length. The fruit is ripe but controlled, moving from dark berries into a savoury, lightly mineral finish that lingers. It has a quiet power, more about structure and detail than upfront fruitiness.
This is a natural match for richer dishes. Roast duck, lamb cutlets with herbs, or pork with crackling all work beautifully, and it also handles earthy flavours like mushrooms or lentils with ease.
It will drink well now with a bit of air, but this is a wine that rewards patience. Eight to fifteen years in the cellar will see it evolve toward more complex notes of spice, forest floor and game, blurring the line between Beaujolais and fine Burgundy.
