Mahi Twin Valleys Chardonnay from the Wairau Valley in Marlborough is a beautifully balanced, textural white that highlights the depth and elegance this region can bring to Chardonnay. Made by winemaker Brian Bicknell, who founded Mahi after years of international winemaking experience, this wine reflects a commitment to small-batch, site-driven wines that speak honestly of place.
Sourced from two vineyard parcels in the cooler southern valleys of Wairau, this Chardonnay benefits from long, slow ripening and naturally vibrant acidity. Wild fermented in French oak (with a good portion of older barrels to avoid overwhelming the fruit), the wine also undergoes full malolactic fermentation and is aged on lees to build complexity and texture.
On the nose, it’s all white peach, lemon curd, crushed hazelnut and a hint of struck match. The palate follows through with stone fruit, citrus, gentle oak spice and a creamy, leesy weight that’s cut through by fresh acidity and a fine mineral edge. It’s elegant without being shy, generous without being heavy.
Brilliant with roast chicken and tarragon, miso-glazed cod, grilled corn or a creamy mushroom risotto. It’s a Chardonnay for those who love texture, precision, and a little savoury intrigue.
