Lawson’s Dry Hills Pinot Gris from Marlborough is a gently aromatic, textural white that captures the more generous, Alsatian-inspired side of this grape variety. Grown in the sheltered subregions of Marlborough where diurnal shifts help preserve acidity while allowing fruit to ripen fully, this Pinot Gris is all about balance — ripe orchard fruit, soft spice and a touch of richness, wrapped around a clean, fresh finish.
The fruit is harvested at optimal ripeness and fermented mainly in stainless steel to retain freshness, with a portion aged on lees and in old oak barrels to enhance weight and texture. A small amount of residual sugar is left in the wine, not enough to make it sweet, but just enough to round out the palate.
Aromas include pear, white nectarine, honeysuckle and baking spice, with a subtle citrus peel note. The palate is smooth and medium bodied, showing poached pear, quince and a hint of ginger, balanced by fresh acidity and a long, soft finish.
Food pairing: excellent with pork belly, chicken and leek pie, roasted root vegetables or mildly spiced Thai dishes. Also a natural match with soft cheeses and fruit-based salads.
Cellar potential: best enjoyed young to capture its vibrant fruit, but will hold well for 3 to 5 years, gaining more honeyed and savoury depth.
