2022 Paolo Scavino Langhe Nebbiolo, Piedmont

Paolo Scavino Langhe Nebbiolo is a beautifully accessible expression of Piedmont’s noble grape, crafted with the same precision and respect for site that defines the estate’s acclaimed Barolo. Sourced primarily from younger vines in the Barolo communes of La Morra and Barolo, this wine delivers the purity and finesse of Nebbiolo in a more approachable frame — ideal for early drinking while offering a glimpse into the Scavino style.

The fruit is hand harvested, destemmed, and fermented in stainless steel, followed by ageing in large neutral oak to soften the tannins while preserving freshness and varietal character. The focus here is elegance over extraction, allowing Nebbiolo’s lifted aromatics and natural acidity to shine.

On the nose, it opens with rose petals, sour cherry, wild strawberry, orange peel and a touch of dried herbs. The palate is medium bodied and bright, showing red berry fruit, blood orange, fine dusty tannins and a hint of spice. There’s a gentle earthiness and savoury undertone that adds depth, finishing with lift and clarity.

Food pairing: perfect with mushroom risotto, braised pork, truffle pasta, roast duck, or tagliatelle with butter and sage. Also lovely with alpine cheeses or simple charcuterie.

Cellar potential: delicious now with a short decant, but will evolve nicely over 5 to 7 years, gaining complexity while retaining freshness.
