Lifted and complex aromas of dark cherry, bramble, sap, spice, dried herbs and an earth underbrush lift. The palate delivers power, concentration and real pinosity. Picardy Pinot Noir from Pemberton is a graceful, Burgundian-inspired wine that has earned a cult following for its elegance, balance, and age-worthiness. Crafted by the Pannell family—led by Bill Pannell, a pioneer of Western Australian Pinot Noir and former founder of Moss Wood—Picardy is all about restraint, finesse, and expression of site.
The Pemberton region, tucked into the cool, forested south-west corner of Western Australia, offers an ideal climate for Pinot Noir. Its long growing season, cool nights, and gravelly karri loam soils produce fruit with lifted aromatics, fine structure, and natural acidity. The vineyard is sustainably farmed and dry-grown, with meticulous attention to canopy management and fruit selection.
Picardy’s Pinot Noir is made using traditional Burgundian techniques. Hand-picked grapes are cold soaked, fermented with a portion of whole bunches, and matured in French oak barrels (typically around 30 percent new) for added structure and spice. The style is built on perfume, savoury depth, and refined texture—not flashy ripeness.
In the glass, expect aromas of red cherry, raspberry, rose petal, forest floor, and subtle oak spice. The palate is medium-bodied, silky, and complex, with layers of red fruit, earthy undertones, and fine-grained tannins. It’s a wine that drinks beautifully young but will evolve for 10–15 years in the cellar.
Picardy Pinot Noir is a benchmark for cool-climate Australian Pinot and one of the country’s most consistently elegant and age-worthy examples
