The Piccini family has been making wine in Tuscany since 1882, growing from a small family estate into one of Italy's best-known wine producers. Their Chianti Classico Riserva celebrates the traditional character of the region, with Sangiovese's vibrant fruit, savoury complexity and firm structure at its heart.
The 2022 comes from the historic Chianti Classico hills between Florence and Siena. Extended maturation gives the wine additional depth and polish while retaining the lively acidity that makes Sangiovese such a wonderful food companion.
Deep ruby red with garnet highlights. Ripe Morello cherry, red plum and blackberry mingle with violet, dried oregano, tobacco and a touch of cedar. The palate is medium to full bodied, with juicy dark cherries, firm but approachable tannins and refreshing acidity. Hints of leather, liquorice and earthy spice carry through a satisfying, savoury finish.
Try it with pappardelle and wild boar ragù, grilled eggplant with tomato and pecorino, or Tuscan white beans with rosemary and slow roasted tomatoes. It is equally appealing alongside a good bistecca alla Fiorentina.
Cellaring: Drink now to 2033. Enjoyable with a little air today, with several years ahead for further savoury development.
