Nebbiolo from the Langhe often provides a fascinating glimpse into the character of Barolo vineyards at a more approachable stage, and Il Favot from Poderi Aldo Conterno is a classic example. Aldo Conterno established the estate in Monforte d’Alba in the late 1960s after leaving the historic Giacomo Conterno winery, creating a property that would become one of the most respected names in Piedmont. Today the estate is run by his sons who continue the family’s commitment to wines that express the Langhe’s remarkable terroir. Il Favot is produced from Nebbiolo grown in vineyards around Bussia and surrounding hillsides where limestone and clay soils bring both fragrance and structure.

The colour shows the classic Nebbiolo garnet with ruby reflections. Aromas are beautifully lifted, offering rose petal, red cherry and raspberry alongside hints of liquorice, dried herbs and subtle spice. As the wine opens further delicate notes of tobacco and forest floor emerge, adding depth and intrigue.

The structure is elegant and lively, with vibrant red berry fruit supported by fine tannins and bright acidity. Flavours of cherry, cranberry and savoury herbs develop through the wine while a gentle mineral backbone provides length and focus. The finish lingers with floral and earthy nuances that hint at the character of Barolo itself.

Braised meats, mushroom dishes, truffle pasta or aged cheeses pair beautifully with this style. While already approachable with a little air, Il Favot Nebbiolo will continue to develop gracefully for ten to fifteen years, gaining further savoury complexity.
