Recently replanted from red, so young vines. Mid yellow in colour, with a density to the nose which was missing in the Santenay. Succulent ripe citrus, some orange blossom, but not too lush. Very impressive for young vines, though of course less persistence than where the vines are older, so drink early. Drink from 2025-2027. Tasted Feb 2024.

Rémi Jobard Monthélie 1er Cru Sur La Velle from Burgundy is a beautifully crafted Pinot Noir that captures the charm and finesse of this lesser-known appellation in the Côte de Beaune. Situated just next to Volnay, Monthélie shares similar soils of clay and limestone, resulting in wines with elegance, bright fruit, and fine structure. Rémi Jobard’s dedication to organic viticulture and minimal-intervention winemaking ensures a pure expression of terroir, with Sur La Velle being one of the standout Premier Cru sites.

Bright ruby in color, the wine opens with aromas of red cherry, wild strawberry, and raspberry, along with floral notes of violet and rose petal. Subtle hints of sweet spices, crushed herbs, and a touch of earth add complexity. On the palate, it is medium-bodied and fresh, with juicy red fruit flavors, lively acidity, and fine-grained tannins. The finish is long and precise, leaving a lingering impression of red berries and a delicate mineral edge.

This Monthélie is a perfect pairing for roast chicken, duck confit, and grilled salmon. It also complements mushroom risotto, charcuterie, and soft cheeses like Brie and Reblochon. While approachable now, Sur La Velle will continue to develop gracefully over the next 8–12 years, gaining more complexity and depth with time.

Rémi Jobard’s focus on detail and terroir-driven winemaking makes this Monthélie 1er Cru a hidden gem in Burgundy, offering excellent value and a true sense of place.
