Tasting this, and I’m already thinking of some roast duck to quell the acidity. An austere style; expect flavours of morello cherries, blood orange juice, Chinese five-spice and cardamon. Tangy and juicy, with a fine line of tannins leaving barely a mark.

Cool, elevated vineyards of the Macedon Ranges produce some of Australia’s most refined Pinot Noir, and the Little Hampton bottling from Shadowfax highlights this beautifully. Shadowfax was founded by the late Phil Jones and has long championed cool climate Victorian sites, with winemaker Matt Harrop continuing the estate’s reputation for elegant, site expressive wines. Fruit for Little Hampton is sourced from carefully selected vineyards in the Macedon Ranges where altitude, volcanic soils and cold nights allow Pinot Noir to ripen slowly while preserving fragrance and natural acidity.
Bright ruby with translucent crimson tones, the aromas are lifted and pure. Red cherry, wild strawberry and raspberry rise from the glass alongside rose petal, subtle spice and a gentle earthy note. A faint mineral edge reflects the volcanic soils of the region.
The wine shows lovely poise and energy, with vibrant red berry fruit supported by fine silky tannins and bright acidity. Notes of cherry, cranberry and soft spice weave through the wine, giving both freshness and detail. The finish lingers with savoury nuance and delicate forest floor complexity.
Roast duck, grilled salmon, mushroom risotto or herb roasted chicken make excellent partners. The balance of fruit, structure and acidity means this Pinot Noir will continue to evolve gracefully for eight to twelve years, gaining further savoury complexity with age.
