A supple, smooth, rich but uplifting red on deck. There's ripe plum, salted licorice, choc-mint, clove and sweet tobacco scents and flavours here, lavish, generous and delightfully velvety. There's a touch of tannin grip in the mix, but, really, this is about the more hedonistic elements in play, and leaning into the sweeter/ripe fruit, spices and comfort the wine brings. It's all quite lovely.

Skillogalee Shiraz from Clare Valley is a bold and complex red wine that highlights the richness and elegance for which the region is known. Produced by Skillogalee, a family-owned winery with a reputation for crafting high-quality, estate-grown wines, this Shiraz captures the essence of the Clare Valley’s unique terroir.

The Skillogalee estate lies in the picturesque Sevenhill area of Clare Valley, where the combination of elevated vineyards, cool nights, and warm days creates ideal conditions for producing Shiraz with vibrant fruit, fine tannins, and balanced acidity. The vines are grown on soils of slate and clay, which contribute to the wine’s characteristic minerality and depth.

Winemaking at Skillogalee focuses on showcasing the natural expression of the fruit. Grapes are hand-picked and carefully sorted before undergoing fermentation in open-top fermenters to enhance aromatics and texture. The wine is then matured in a mix of French and American oak barrels for 18-24 months, adding layers of spice and complexity while softening the tannins.

In the glass, Skillogalee Shiraz displays a deep crimson hue with purple highlights. The nose is aromatic and inviting, offering notes of blackberries, plums, and dark cherries, complemented by hints of pepper, clove, and vanilla. On the palate, it is full-bodied and luscious, with velvety tannins and well-integrated acidity supporting flavors of ripe dark fruit, licorice, and a touch of smoky oak. The finish is long and harmonious, showcasing the wine’s elegance and power.

This Shiraz is a versatile food companion, pairing beautifully with dishes such as grilled lamb chops, beef brisket, or slow-cooked stews. It also complements hearty vegetarian options like eggplant parmigiana or mushroom-based dishes. While approachable now, Skillogalee Shiraz has the structure to age gracefully for 8-12 years, developing additional complexity with time.
