The Spring Vale Estate Pinot Noir from the Freycinet Coast is a refined, cool-climate expression that reflects the unique character of Tasmania’s east coast. Spring Vale is a family-run estate established in 1875, with vineyards planted on sandy loam soils over clay at Cranbrook. The coastal location ensures a long, gentle ripening season, moderated by maritime breezes that preserve freshness and aromatic detail in the wines. The Spring Vale team, now guided by fifth-generation custodians, focus on minimal intervention winemaking to let the vineyard’s character shine.
The Freycinet Coast is gaining a reputation as one of Tasmania’s great regions for Pinot Noir, and this estate wine is a fine example. Grapes are handpicked and fermented with a proportion of whole berries to emphasise fruit purity. Gentle plunging and cool fermentations bring perfume and delicacy, while ageing in French oak barrels, with a modest percentage new, adds subtle spice and structure without dominating the wine.
In the glass, the Pinot Noir is bright ruby. The nose is aromatic and lifted, offering red cherry, wild strawberry and raspberry alongside rose petal, spice and a hint of coastal herb. On the palate it is medium-bodied and silky, with pure red fruit layered over fine tannins and vibrant acidity. A savoury, mineral undertone provides depth, and the finish is long, elegant and precise.
Food pairings highlight its freshness and subtlety: duck breast with cherry glaze, roast quail, grilled salmon, or vegetarian dishes such as mushroom risotto, beetroot carpaccio or lentil salad with herbs. While approachable in youth for its brightness, it will reward 6 to 8 years of cellaring, developing complexity with notes of forest floor, truffle and spice.
