Tenuta Ulisse, established in 2006 by brothers Antonio and Luigi Ulisse, has quickly become one of Abruzzo’s most dynamic and quality-focused producers. Located in Crecchio, in the province of Chieti, the winery marries traditional Italian viticulture with a modern, innovative approach to winemaking. Its vineyards stretch from coastal plains to foothills, taking advantage of Abruzzo’s diverse microclimates and the cooling breezes from both the Adriatic Sea and the Majella mountains. The Sogno di Ulisse range was created to express the region’s native varieties in a fresh, approachable style while still retaining varietal purity and a strong sense of place.
The Tenuta Ulisse Sogno di Ulisse Montepulciano d’Abruzzo DOP captures the generous fruit and smooth texture for which the variety is known. Deep ruby in the glass, it opens with inviting aromas of ripe black cherry, plum, and blackberry, accented by violet, sweet spice, and a hint of cocoa. The palate is medium to full-bodied with plush dark fruit flavours, soft tannins, and balanced acidity, making it an easy-drinking yet characterful wine. Ageing in a combination of stainless steel and oak helps preserve freshness while adding a gentle layer of spice and roundness.
This Montepulciano is a versatile partner for food, pairing well with spaghetti alla chitarra with lamb ragù, wood-fired pizza topped with Italian sausage, roast pork with rosemary, or grilled Mediterranean vegetables. Best enjoyed young to savour its vibrant fruit, it can also be cellared for up to five years for a slightly more savoury profile.
