2022 Terroir al Limit Priorat Historic Negre, Catalonia

The red 2022 Terroir Històric was produced with a blend of 75% Garnacha and 25% Cariñena from nine different villages where the soils are also different—slate, clay, granite and alluvial—from vines of around 20 years of age. The full clusters fermented with natural yeasts, and the wine matured for six months in stainless steel tanks. It's the ripest of the reds from 2022, with 14% alcohol but kept good freshness and a pH of 3.54. It's primary and juicy, young and tender, with fine tannins.

Terroir al Límit’s Priorat Historic Negre is a soulful, expressive red that captures the raw essence of Priorat through a lens of finesse and restraint. This isn’t the heavy, oaky powerhouse that the region once leaned on—it’s a beautifully transparent take on a dramatic landscape, shaped by schistous llicorella soils and steep terraces that demand both grit and grace from the vines and the winemaker.

Founded by Dominik Huber and originally in collaboration with Eben Sadie, Terroir al Límit has become a driving force behind the "New Priorat" movement. Their approach takes inspiration from Burgundy more than Bordeaux, favouring freshness, balance, and a hands-off approach in the winery. Historic Negre is their tribute to the traditional Priorat field blend, based predominantly on Garnacha and Cariñena from old vines scattered across various historic villages.

Fermented with whole bunches and raised in concrete rather than oak, the wine is bright, savoury, and deeply mineral. You’ll find wild red berries, pomegranate, crushed herbs and graphite on the nose. The palate is taut and energetic, with fine tannins and a long, stony finish that echoes the region’s dramatic terrain.

This is a Priorat with soul and tension, not just power. Drink it now for its aromatic vibrancy or cellar it for 5 to 8 years to reveal more savoury depth and complexity. Food-wise, it’s excellent with chargrilled lamb, grilled eggplant, or Catalan-style rabbit with romesco.
