Fine aromatics of clay and light red berry fruits, a touch of soil smoke and died herb qualities. Dry, youthful, salivating and new as the wine touches the palate. Flavours of cherries and plums then some light clay-earth qualities with a light-weight spice suggestion. Well made and ready to drink from late 2024 through 2029.

Sourced from a patchwork of older sites in Riverland, with back-burners of shiraz (4%) and mataro (1%) in the mix. Wild fermented in large neutral oak with a good seasoning of whole bunches. No fining or filtering, serving to retain the integrity of fruit while promoting its natural energy. Sappy, fruity and punchy. Full-bodied, yet you'd hardly know it. Nothing at all heavy here. Drinks like a candied pinot, reeling off notes of rosehip, maraschino cherry and Seville orange before a bristle of bunchy tannins concludes. A little torrefacted, needing a chill for savouriness.

Thistledown has carved out a reputation for Grenache that feels both modern and deeply respectful of old vineyards, and Gorgeous Grenache is where it all begins. Led by Giles Cooke MW, the focus is on sourcing parcels from across South Australia that deliver perfume, finesse and drinkability, often from old bush vines rooted in sandy soils. It is a wine designed to showcase Grenache in its most approachable and expressive form.
South Australia offers a diverse palette, and by blending sites, Thistledown captures a broader expression of the variety, balancing ripe fruit with freshness and lift. The winemaking leans toward a lighter touch, avoiding heavy extraction and letting the natural character of Grenache shine.
Bright crimson with a translucent hue, the aromatics are immediately engaging. Raspberry, red cherry and strawberry lead, followed by rose petal, spice and a gentle herbal note. There is a purity and brightness that makes it very inviting.
The palate is juicy and vibrant, red fruits flowing across a soft, silky frame. Tannins are fine and unobtrusive, while a line of fresh acidity keeps everything lively and moreish. A subtle savoury edge adds interest, but the focus remains on balance and drinkability, finishing clean and bright.
This is made for relaxed, flavour driven food. Chargrilled chicken, lamb, or even a simple pizza all work beautifully. It also handles lightly spiced dishes with ease, making it a versatile option for casual meals.
Best enjoyed in its youth over the next three to five years while that vibrancy is at its peak.
There is a real sense of fun here, a wine that lives up to its name, generous, bright and easy to enjoy, perfect for sharing without overthinking it.
