A blend of 95% shiraz and 5% roussanne from the Hillside vineyard in the southern subregion of Lyndoch. Blueberry and Doris plum fruits flecked with jasmine, roasting meats, cardamom, citrus blossom, bay leaf, licorice, vanilla bean and wood spice. There's a pure fruit flow and fine, toothsome tannins, a seam of fresh acidity and a touch of cured meats right on the way out. Good drinking. Drink to 2030.

93 points & Special Value Dave Brookes for Halliday Wine Companion, May 2024

The 2022 Hillside Vineyard Shiraz Roussanne is floral and yet meaty on the nose, with roast beef crust, pomegranate pearls, raspberry coulis, red dirt and ironstone, graphite and black tea. There's a lot going on here, plenty of punch. Drink to 2032.

92 points Erin Larkin for The Wine Advocate, April 2024

The Hillside near Lyndoch in Barossa’s southwestern reaches is one of the most important vineyards for Torbreck. It was first planted by the Springbett family in 1850 with Torbreck Vintners acquiring the property in 2002, resurrecting its old Shiraz and Grenache vines and restoring the charming historic ironstone buildings while planting new vineyard blocks to other Rhone varieties Counoise, Carignan, Mataro, Grenache Blanc, Roussanne and Marsanne.

The 2024 Hillside Shiraz and Roussanne was made by fermenting Shiraz fruit on the whole bunch pressed skins of Roussanne. The final wine is roughly 5% of the latter, with the wine matured for fourteen months in a seasoned 4,500L oak foudre.

About this producer

Torbreck Vintners was established by Dave Powell in 1994, and from the very beginning, the wines have been no stranger to drama of the very best kind: high international acclaim driven by their power and sense of place.

The focus has always been on respectful treatment of old vine Barossa fruit through traditional winemaking. Today Chief Winemaker Ian Hongell continues that philosophy, working with growers across the region for access to supplement the special parcels of fruit grown in estate vineyards as well as those grown under custodianship through long-term lease agreements of old vine sites.
