Energetic, earthy and savoury regional blend in a 1500mL magnum size perfect for dinner parties and extended cellaring
A refined yet savory nose of blackcurrants, wild blackberries, mocha and iodine. The palate is full-bodied with finely integrated tannins and bright acidity, giving notes of mulberry bush, olive tapenade and ferric earth. Very chewy and structured with an underlying freshness. Delicious. Drink or hold.
94 points James Suckling, October 2024
A harmonious, black-cherry-rich shiraz sourced from the Barossan parishes of Marananga, Greenock, Seppeltsfield, Gomersal, Moppa, Lyndoch and Ebenezer. Satsuma plum, the aforementioned cherries, five-spice, bay leaf, licorice, biltong, citrus blossom and earth. I love the pure, savoury fruit core here, like a tube of black cherry and spice, travelling straight and true with fine tannin support and boundless energy. Great drinking. Drink to 2035.
93 points Special Value Dave Brookes for Halliday Wine Companion, March 2025
The 2023 Woodcutter's Shiraz is perfumed and vital with garden rose, pomegranate, raspberry, blood plum and tapenade. The wine is rich and flavorsome, and it accurately delivers the Barossa message encased in ferruginous tannins and bloody, earthy fruit. It's excellent and a great value. Drink to 2033.
92 points Erin Larkin for The Wine Advocate, April 2025
Very deep, almost glass-staining red-purple colour; meaty/earthy, spice and gently jammy fruit aromas. The wine is full-bodied and firm with slightly gritty tannins and remarkable depth and drive for the price. Solid shiraz, not refined but rewarding to drink now with hearty proteins and has some aging potential too. Value. Drink to 2037.
90 points Huon Hooke for The Real Review, November 2024
The 2023 Woodcutter’s Shiraz comes from an excellent, somewhat cooler than average Barossa Valley season and blends fruit from Marananga, Greenock, Seppeltsfield, Gomersal, Moppa, Lyndoch and Ebenezer. It was matured for 12 months in well-seasoned French oak hogsheads and foudre.
About this producer
Torbreck Vintners was established by Dave Powell in 1994, and from the very beginning, the wines have been no stranger to drama of the very best kind: high international acclaim driven by their power and sense of place.
The focus has always been on respectful treatment of old vine Barossa fruit through traditional winemaking. Today Chief Winemaker Ian Hongell continues that philosophy, working with growers across the region for access to supplement the special parcels of fruit grown in estate vineyards as well as those grown under custodianship through long-term lease agreements of old vine sites.
