In 2022, the Steading blend is 50/31/19% grenache/shiraz/mataro and is the picture of the contemporary Barossan GSM. Red and blue fruits predominately, with a flash of blueberry and cranberry providing the high tones. Plenty of detail and delineation, the gingery spiced grenache and meaty-edged mataro clearly visible and simpatico with the shiraz fruit tones. There's some pith to the fine, sandy tannins and a mineral sapidity to its savoury endpoint. Great drinking. Consistently.

On a highland farm in Scotland the collection of barns, stables and outbuildings is known as a Steading. In the Barossa Valley the varieties Grenache, Mataro and Shiraz all stand in their own right, however in blending, their strengths create a complex wine of solid, earthy structure.
The Steading is a collection of 45 different sources of fruit, some from our own vineyard estates as well as from growers on a share-farming basis. These precious grapes are vinified separately and blended once their individual virtues have been assessed.Generous and supple flavours combine with its silken texture in a wine that defines what is possible only in the Barossa. The Steading is very much the heart and soul of Torbreck, the wine that exemplifies our philosophy and beliefs - protecting and nurturing the old vine resources of the Barossa Valley is paramount to Torbreck and this wine.
Torbreck The Steading Grenache Shiraz Mataro from Barossa Valley is a robust and elegant blend that showcases the rich winemaking tradition and terroir of this renowned Australian wine region. Crafted by Torbreck, a winery celebrated for its dedication to Rhone-style blends and old-vine Barossa fruit, The Steading embodies a harmonious mix of Grenache, Shiraz, and Mataro (Mourvèdre), each grape bringing unique characteristics to the blend. Torbreck sources these grapes from some of the oldest vines in Barossa, many over 100 years old, which contribute depth, complexity, and concentration to the wine.
The Steading blend offers layered aromas of dark berries, red currant, and ripe plum, with underlying notes of licorice, wild herbs, and earthy spice. On the palate, it’s full-bodied and plush, with flavors of black cherry, raspberry, and subtle smoky hints from oak aging. The Shiraz adds richness and structure, the Grenache provides a juicy red fruit character, and the Mataro lends depth and savory complexity. Fine-grained tannins and a balanced acidity create a smooth and lengthy finish, showcasing the wine’s aging potential while making it enjoyable in its youth.
This blend pairs exceptionally well with hearty dishes, including roasted meats, barbecue, and rich, savory stews. Its bold structure and layered flavors make it an excellent choice for special occasions and aging in the cellar.
