2022 Vickery Reserve Mason Woodcarvers Vineyard Riesling, Eden Valley

From the excellent 2022 vintage, this is sourced from a single vineyard in the region, the Mason Woodcarvers Vineyard. Just 125 dozen made. Lemon yellow in colour, the aromas are florals and limes. There is an early touch of honeysuckle. Bright acidity, focus, balance and length, this is an exquisite Riesling. It will drink superbly for at least the next twelve to twenty years and if anyone is looking to add a glorious Eden Valley Riesling to their cellar, for what is effectively peanuts in the world of fine wine these days, this is it. High in the cool elevations of Eden Valley, the Mason Woodcarvers Vineyard provides fruit for one of the most refined expressions of Riesling in the Vickery range. Vickery Wines was created to honour the legacy of the late John Vickery, widely regarded as one of Australia’s greatest Riesling winemakers and often referred to as the godfather of Australian Riesling. The wines are crafted today by winemaker Keeda Zilm, who worked alongside Vickery for many years and continues his philosophy of precision, purity and respect for site. The Mason Woodcarvers Vineyard sits on elevated slopes where ancient soils and a cool climate allow Riesling to ripen slowly while preserving its vibrant natural acidity.

The wine shows a pale straw colour with brilliant green highlights. Aromas rise with intense lime zest, green apple and citrus blossom layered with hints of white flowers and subtle slate like minerality. With time in the glass delicate notes of lemon curd and crushed stone begin to appear. The palate is vibrant and finely structured with flavours of lime, grapefruit and crisp orchard fruit carried by piercing acidity and a chalky mineral line. The balance between intensity and elegance is striking, leading to a long, pure finish that reflects the clarity of Eden Valley Riesling.

While already beautifully expressive, the wine has the structure to evolve over the next fifteen to twenty years, gradually developing classic notes of toast and honey with age.
