In fact this is Grands Epenots, though not specified thus on the label. 5% comes from their own vines and is made as whole bunch, the rest is not. Deep and intense, with a profound dark raspberry fruit, fine intensity through the middle, then more fruit to cover any final tannins. Supple dark fruit with a touch of chocolate maybe. Drink from 2030-2036. Tasted Nov 2023.

Vincent Girardin Pommard Les Epenots 1er Cru is a powerful and sophisticated expression of Pinot Noir from one of Pommard’s most esteemed premier cru vineyards. Crafted by Vincent Girardin, a producer renowned for his dedication to terroir and precision winemaking, this wine showcases the depth and elegance that make Pommard a jewel of Burgundy. The Les Epenots vineyard is celebrated for producing structured, age-worthy wines with remarkable complexity and finesse.

The Les Epenots vineyard lies in the northern part of Pommard, close to the border with Beaune, and benefits from a combination of clay-limestone soils and excellent exposure. These conditions provide richness, concentration, and minerality to the wine, while the vineyard’s well-drained soils enhance aromatic intensity and fine tannins.

Vincent Girardin’s winemaking philosophy emphasizes minimal intervention to preserve the natural character of the vineyard. The grapes are hand-harvested, carefully sorted, and fermented with indigenous yeasts in temperature-controlled vats. Aging takes place in French oak barrels, approximately 30% of which are new, for 14-16 months. This process adds complexity and structure while maintaining balance and elegance.

In the glass, the wine reveals a deep ruby hue. The nose is rich and expressive, offering aromas of black cherries, wild berries, and plums, layered with notes of violets, forest floor, and subtle spice. On the palate, it is full-bodied and well-structured, with refined tannins and vibrant acidity supporting flavors of dark fruit, licorice, and earthy undertones. The finish is long and complex, leaving a lasting impression of power and elegance.

This Pommard is an excellent pairing for hearty dishes such as roasted duck, beef Bourguignon, or lamb chops with rosemary. It also complements wild mushrooms, truffle-based dishes, or aged cheeses. While approachable with decanting, the wine’s structure makes it a candidate for extended cellaring, rewarding patience with even greater depth and complexity over the next 10-20 years.
