Fine pale lemon, with a deliciously perfumed bouquet, elegant but with some body. A few peach skins show the riper side but all in harmony with a decent acidity behind. “Digeste” says Xavier. Note the very long aftertaste with ripe citrus.
88 points, Jasper Morris MW Inside Burgundy Drink: 2024-2027
Les Grandes Coutures sits on well placed limestone around Meursault, and Xavier Monnot treats it like a serious Bourgogne Blanc rather than an afterthought. With his shift toward a more terroir focused, restrained style, this cuvée consistently punches above its level, offering a clear snapshot of his approach and the region.
The 2022 vintage is open and inviting. Aromatics lead with pear, white peach and lemon zest, backed by a touch of grapefruit that adds freshness. There is a subtle savoury layer building underneath, almond, a hint of spice and a faint flinty edge that gives the wine definition.
On the palate it sits in the medium bodied range with a smooth, lightly rounded texture, but there is a clean line of acidity running through it. Stone fruit and citrus carry the core, with restrained oak adding just enough shape and depth. The finish is fresh and mineral, with a lightly savoury, lingering edge.
Monnot’s winemaking is all about balance, careful pressing and thoughtful élevage allowing the vineyard character to come through while keeping the wine accessible and precise.
This is a great match for seafood and lighter dishes. Think grilled prawns with lemon and garlic, a simple fish with herbs, or spaghetti vongole. It also works beautifully with dishes like zucchini fritters, a savoury tart, or crispy potatoes with rosemary and aioli, where the wine’s freshness and texture lift everything.
Drinking beautifully now for its brightness and charm, it will continue to hold over the next five to seven years, developing a little more nutty complexity while keeping its energy.
