Bowen Estate Shiraz from Coonawarra is a rich, structured red that blends the bold personality of Shiraz with the cool-climate elegance that defines this renowned South Australian region. Grown on the estate’s Terra Rossa soils, this wine showcases the Bowen family’s commitment to hands-on viticulture and restrained, varietal winemaking.
Established in 1972 by Doug and Joy Bowen, Bowen Estate is now guided by second-generation winemaker Emma Bowen, who brings a modern, nuanced touch to the wines while respecting the family’s legacy. The Shiraz is fermented in traditional open-top fermenters, then matured in a mix of French and American oak, with around one third new barrels, to enhance structure and complexity without dominating the fruit.
The nose is filled with ripe blackberry, dark plum and mulberry, laced with pepper spice, liquorice and hints of vanilla and cedar. On the palate, it’s full-bodied yet balanced, with generous dark fruit, supple tannins and a fine acid line that keeps it fresh and persistent. The subtle mint and earthy undertones are classic markers of Coonawarra’s cool-climate influence.
Pair it with slow-cooked beef short ribs, grilled lamb cutlets, spicy sausages or a rich lentil and mushroom stew. It also works well with aged cheddar or hard sheep’s milk cheese. While approachable young, this Shiraz will cellar gracefully for 8 to 12 years.
