Bowen Estate Cabernet Sauvignon from Coonawarra is a classic, full-bodied red that showcases the pure varietal expression and distinctive regional character that have made Coonawarra Cabernet world-renowned. Established in 1972 by Doug and Joy Bowen, Bowen Estate remains a family-run operation, with their daughter Emma Bowen now leading the winemaking, blending tradition with a modern sensibility.
Sourced from the estate’s own vineyards on the famed Terra Rossa soils, this Cabernet is built on intensity, structure and balance. The red clay over limestone promotes excellent drainage and root penetration, producing small berries with concentrated flavour and firm, fine tannins. The wine is fermented in open-top fermenters and aged in French oak barriques, around a third of them new, to build complexity without overpowering the fruit.
The nose is packed with classic Coonawarra Cabernet markers—blackcurrant, mulberry, mint and dried herbs—framed by cedar, graphite and subtle vanilla spice. The palate is focused and long, with cassis, plum and dark chocolate flavours supported by polished tannins and vibrant acidity. It’s a wine with both immediate charm and serious ageing potential.
Pair with roast lamb with rosemary and garlic, chargrilled ribeye, mushroom stroganoff or mature cheddar. Cellar comfortably for 10 to 15 years to enjoy its evolution from fruit-driven vibrancy to complex, savoury depth.
