The 2023 Riesling Wachenheimer Böhlig P.C. has more active lime in the soil than any other of the estate's vineyards. Yeasty funk still dominates, but the palate is a picture of equanimity. The Riesling's fine, ripe acid flows like it was bedded on squishy marshmallows. Everything is rounded, smooth, buffered and serene. The juicy fruit appears later: bright pear and ripe lemon. (Bone-dry)
93-95 points Anne Krebiehl MW for Vinous
Sheltered within the celebrated vineyards of Wachenheim, the Bohlig Premier Cru vineyard is prized for producing Rieslings that combine aromatic finesse with impressive structure and longevity. Weingut Dr. Bürklin-Wolf, founded in 1597, has been instrumental in elevating the reputation of Germany's Pfalz through its commitment to biodynamic viticulture and a Burgundy inspired vineyard classification. The P.C. designation identifies vineyards of outstanding quality, and Bohlig is a superb example of the estate's terroir driven philosophy.
The vineyard's sandstone, limestone and loam soils provide excellent drainage while encouraging deep root systems and remarkable mineral expression. The warm Pfalz climate is tempered by cool evening breezes, allowing Riesling to ripen slowly while retaining vibrant acidity. The excellent 2023 vintage produced fruit of exceptional purity, delivering a wine with energy, precision and beautifully defined fruit.
Pale straw with bright green highlights, the bouquet is vibrant and expressive, revealing aromas of lime blossom, white peach and ripe pear layered with notes of lemon zest, fresh herbs and crushed stone. The palate is dry and beautifully focused, combining citrus, grapefruit and orchard fruit flavours with a fine chalky mineral thread. Bright natural acidity provides freshness and drive, while the texture is both refined and beautifully persistent. The finish is long, precise and elegantly savoury, lingering with citrus peel and stony complexity.
A wonderful match for grilled scallops, lobster, pork schnitzel, smoked trout, sushi or asparagus with hollandaise. Equally rewarding as an aperitif, it showcases the precision, purity and quiet confidence that have made Bürklin-Wolf one of Germany's benchmark Riesling producers.
