Christophe Patrice Chardonnay Vin de France is a quietly charming and beautifully pure expression of Chardonnay from a winemaker best known for his precise, mineral Chablis. Patrice works vineyards just outside the Chablis appellation boundary, where the same cool climate and limestone rich soils give fruit with brightness, subtle texture and a gentle saline accent. Farming is hands on and respectful of the land, with low yields and careful picking to preserve tension. Fermentation is spontaneous with natural yeasts, and ageing takes place in stainless steel to keep the wine focused on fresh fruit and stony clarity rather than oak. It tastes like a relaxed cousin of Chablis but still carries that unmistakable northern Burgundy pedigree. The aromas are fresh and inviting with lemon, green apple and crunchy pear supported by white peach, citrus blossom and a soft hint of almond. A delicate mineral undertone suggests crushed oyster shell and cool wet stones, a nod to the soils that define the region. As the wine opens in the glass, notes of grapefruit, jasmine and a faint herbal lift appear, adding complexity while keeping the style crisp and clean.
The palate is sleek, lively and beautifully balanced. Bright citrus and orchard fruit glide across a lightly creamy mid palate shaped by a short time on lees. Flavours of lemon zest, pear skin, peach and subtle spice unfold in gentle layers. A fine thread of acidity runs through everything, giving drive and a refreshing finish that lingers with fruit, florals and cool mineral lift. It is delicious young but will develop a little extra texture and nuttiness over the next couple of years.
A brilliant match for grilled whiting, oysters, sushi, roast chicken, goat cheese, fresh pasta with herbs, spring vegetables or a breezy evening aperitif. It offers tremendous value for anyone who loves the elegance of northern Burgundy.
