Croix & Courbet is the collaboration between two old friends, David Croix of Burgundy and Damien Courbet of the Jura. Together they have created a small collection of wines that combines Burgundian finesse with the distinctive character of Jura vineyards. Their Calvaire Chardonnay is a particularly intriguing expression of this partnership.
Grown in the Jura's limestone and marl soils, the 2023 is made in the ouillé style, with barrels topped up during maturation to prevent the development of the oxidative character traditionally associated with some Jura whites. The result is a fresh, finely textured Chardonnay that places the fruit and vineyard firmly in the spotlight.
Pale straw gold with bright green reflections. Lemon zest, white peach and crisp pear mingle with delicate white flowers, toasted hazelnut and a hint of flint. The palate is lively and beautifully balanced, with citrus and orchard fruit, subtle creaminess and a distinctly chalky, saline edge. A gentle savoury nuttiness carries through the long, refreshing finish.
Try it with grilled kingfish and yuzu kosho, a Comté and caramelised onion tart, or roasted fennel with lemon and white beans. Its mineral freshness also makes it an excellent partner for oysters dressed with cucumber and green apple.
Cellaring: Drink now to 2033. The combination of freshness and texture should reward several years in the cellar.
