They have 2ha here, some on the lower slopes, on clay and limestone with a little iron oxide, and some higher up on white marl, where the pinot is going to be pulled out and replanted in white. Another dense magenta purple. Generous fruit, dark strawberries, much suppler on the palate than Clos Charlé and a slightly less cooked fruit, and enough - but less aggressive - acidity. Domaine Desvignes is one of Givry’s historic family estates, with generations devoted to the vineyards of the Côte Chalonnaise. Today, siblings Gautier and Aurélie Desvignes are driving the domaine forward with meticulous vineyard work and a light touch in the cellar. Their wines have become increasingly sought after by Burgundy lovers looking beyond the famous Côte d’Or villages for serious quality, distinctive terroir and considerably more sensible value.

La Grande Berge is one of Givry’s notable Premier Cru sites, producing wines with an enticing combination of perfume, generosity and structure. The 2023 vintage brings beautifully ripe fruit, while the vineyard’s limestone and clay soils provide freshness and a savoury mineral edge. Sensitive élevage keeps the fruit vibrant and allows the character of the site to remain firmly in focus.

Bright ruby with crimson highlights, the bouquet opens with wild cherry, raspberry and ripe red plum, followed by violets, dried herbs and gentle spice. With air, earthy notes, crushed stone and a touch of woodland complexity emerge. The palate is supple and generous, with juicy red fruits wrapped in fine tannins and lively acidity. There is lovely depth through the middle, balanced by an energetic mineral thread, before a long finish of red cherry, spice and savoury earth.

A cracking bottle for roast duck, pork tenderloin with cherries, coq au vin, mushroom pithivier or Époisses with crusty bread. This is exactly the sort of Premier Cru that makes Givry such an exciting hunting ground for Burgundy drinkers: plenty of character, genuine vineyard identity and excellent value.
