2023 Domaine Desvignes Givry 1er Cru Cuvée Ozymandias, Burgundy

Black cherry, woodsy, creamier edged aromatics. Fresh, very impressive. Palate silkier & fleshier. Prickly ripe fruit, sour plum & violet. Nice tannic freshness, very long. 
Taking its name from Percy Bysshe Shelley’s poem, the 2023 Givry 1er Cru Cuvée Ozymandias comes from two premier cru plots, blending Pinot Noir and Pinot Fin. Vivid and immediately engaging, it centers on bright acai-tinged berries and cherries, with a blood-orange lift that keeps the palate fresh. Oak plays a supporting role, adding a dry, spicy frame and guiding the wine toward a lightly nutty close. Very fine, powdery tannins and tangy acidity keep it buoyant and easy. It's a highly quaffable red with light-footed, fruit-forward charm.

This cuvée was created in 2022 to celebrate the birth of their daughter. It is a blend of Le Vernoy and Crémillons, both recently planted in pinot fin, in 2016 and 2012. Glowing purple with a fine lifted nose. A much livelier red fruit, raspberry pastilles with an alpine edge, very stylish, the oak is well integrated, with a long classy finish. Drink from 2027-2030. Domaine Desvignes is one of Givry’s historic family estates, with the Desvignes family cultivating vines in the Côte Chalonnaise for generations. Today siblings Gautier and Aurélie Desvignes are bringing renewed attention to the domaine through meticulous vineyard work and thoughtful, understated winemaking. Cuvée Ozymandias is one of their more intriguing Premier Cru releases, showing the depth and individuality that have made Givry increasingly exciting for serious Burgundy drinkers.

The 2023 vintage brought generous ripeness balanced by excellent freshness, giving the wine both immediate charm and underlying structure. The limestone and clay soils contribute a cool mineral edge, while sensitive élevage preserves the fruit and allows the vineyard character to take centre stage.

Bright ruby with crimson highlights, the nose opens with wild cherry, raspberry and red plum, followed by violets, dried herbs and fragrant spice. With air come hints of forest floor, crushed stone and subtle earthiness. The palate is supple yet beautifully structured, with juicy red fruit carried by fine tannins and lively acidity. Savoury notes build through the middle, leading to a long finish of cherry, spice, earth and cool mineral freshness.

A cracking partner for roast duck, pigeon, beef bourguignon, mushroom pithivier or a gloriously ripe Époisses. This is exactly the sort of bottle that makes exploring the Côte Chalonnaise so rewarding: serious Premier Cru Burgundy with personality, character and plenty of drinking pleasure.
