2023 Fabien Coche Meursault Rouge, Burgundy

Fabien Coche Meursault Rouge is a rare and intriguing expression of Pinot Noir from a village best known for its white wines. While Meursault’s reputation is almost entirely built on Chardonnay, a small proportion of Pinot has always been planted on its clay-limestone soils, and in the hands of a producer like Fabien Coche, the results are distinctive and refined.

Fabien Coche, who has transformed his family domaine (formerly Coche-Bizouard) into one of the most exciting names in the Côte de Beaune, treats his red vineyards with the same meticulous care as his whites. Farming is organic, with strict yield control to ensure concentration. In the cellar, he uses native yeasts, gentle extraction, and ageing in fine-grained French oak (with limited new barrels), producing a wine that is supple and elegant rather than heavy-handed.

In the glass, Meursault Rouge offers perfumed aromas of wild strawberry, cherry, redcurrant and rose petal, supported by subtle spice and an earthy mineral undertone. The palate is vibrant and medium-bodied, showing precise red fruit, silky tannins, and a lifted finish with a touch of savoury forest floor. While approachable young, it has the structure and balance to age gracefully for 6–8 years, gaining more complexity and savoury depth.

This wine is versatile at the table. It pairs beautifully with roast chicken and thyme, duck breast with cherries, or mushroom and truffle risotto. Semi-soft cheeses like Tomme or Reblochon also highlight its delicate red fruit and earthy spice.
