Flowstone Touriga is a striking and quietly original Margaret River red, shaped by thoughtful winemaking and a strong sense of place. Owned and made by Stuart Pym and Janice McDonald, Flowstone is a small, quality driven project that focuses on purity, balance and texture rather than power. Both winemakers bring decades of Margaret River experience, and that confidence shows in the restraint and clarity of this wine.
Touriga Nacional thrives in Margaret River’s gravelly loam soils and maritime climate. Warm days encourage deep colour and aromatic intensity, while cooling ocean breezes preserve natural acidity and lift. Rather than chasing a Portuguese style, this wine speaks clearly of its Australian coastal home, with freshness and finesse sitting alongside structure.
The aromatics are immediately engaging, with violets, dark cherry, blackberry and plum skin, layered with hints of dried herbs, cocoa and spice. The palate is firm yet finely tuned, showing powdery tannins, bright line and a long savoury finish. It has depth and presence without feeling heavy, making it both serious and very drinkable.
This is an excellent food wine. Slow cooked lamb shoulder, grilled beef, duck, venison or earthy vegetarian dishes all work beautifully. The natural floral lift of Touriga also makes it a smart match for gently spiced dishes.
Flowstone Touriga drinks well now but will reward patience over eight to twelve years, gaining savoury complexity and depth in the cellar. It is a compelling example of how alternative varieties can shine in Margaret River when guided by experienced, thoughtful hands.
