The Gibson Duke Grenache from the Barossa Valley is a vibrant, medium-bodied red that celebrates one of the region’s most historic and expressive varieties. Grenache has been grown in the Barossa since the 19th century, originally planted for fortified wines, but today it has found renewed acclaim as one of the Valley’s most exciting styles of red. Gibson Wines, led by winemaker Rob Gibson – affectionately known as “The Dirtman” for his deep viticultural expertise – crafts the Duke Grenache with an emphasis on purity, energy and drinkability.
Fruit for the Duke Grenache is sourced from old-vine blocks across the Barossa, where sandy soils and warm days yield fruit with lifted aromatics and generous flavour. Winemaking focuses on minimal intervention, with open fermenters, gentle extraction and a touch of oak maturation to frame the fruit without overwhelming it. The aim is to showcase Grenache’s perfume and charm while retaining texture and structure.
In the glass it is bright ruby with crimson edges. Aromas leap out with red cherry, raspberry and wild strawberry, alongside rose petals, spice and hints of white pepper. The palate is medium-bodied and juicy, offering vibrant red fruits supported by silky tannins and a lively acid line. Subtle earthy notes and savoury spice add depth, leading to a long, fresh and moreish finish.
Food pairings reflect its lively and approachable style: charcuterie, grilled lamb skewers, roast chicken with herbs, or vegetarian dishes such as ratatouille, roasted capsicum or mushroom pizza. It also works well slightly chilled on warmer days, making it one of the Barossa’s most versatile reds. With 5 to 8 years of cellaring potential, it will develop softer textures and savoury complexity while retaining its bright fruit core.
