2023 Glaetzer Anaperenna Shiraz Cabernet, Barossa Valley

This is a classic, tried-and-tested Barossa combination that has always produced super wines over the years. Once again, as with these Glaetzer wines, there’s plenty of old fruit involved, with vines up to 100 years old for the Shiraz and 130 years old for the Cabernet. After fermentation, the wine was matured for 16 months in all-new oak hogsheads, 92% French and 8% American. The colour is deep, super deep. On the nose there are concentrated, almost raisin-like characters with blackberry, dark plum, and aromatic herbs and black pepper. The palate is plush and rich, with a density of dark berries and rich chocolate, perfectly crafted and seamlessly integrated. This really is a classy wine. Drink to 2046.

A deeply fruited and consistently excellent shiraz cabernet from Ben Glaetzer. It's an 82/18% split of old-vine fruit sourced from the famed northern subregion of Ebenezer. Dark plum, blackberry and black cherry fruits dredged with baking spices, licorice, cedar, vanilla pod, olive tapenade, fruitcake, pan juices and earth. Full bodied, with a seam of fresh acidity, powdery, chocolatey tannins and a sense of harmony and balance as the flavours stretch themselves out nicely. Drink to 2040.

A dark, inky, opaque red in appearance. Lifted aromas of mulberry, stewed plum, bramble, mocha, dried herbs and spice. Full-bodied and mouth-filling, with a core of briary dark fruits, cedar and shapely, textured tannins. Smart length, shape and presence. Will age well. Drink to 2041.

A Barossa version of the classic Aussie red blend, 86% Shiraz and 14% Cabernet, the fruit came from the Ebenezer sub-region located at the northern end of the Barossa Valley. The vines were 30 to 100 years in age for the Shiraz and 30 to 130 years for the Cabernet. Maturation was in new oak hogsheads for sixteen months, 92% French and 8% American. Under cork. Vibrant dark crimson with a purple edge, this is richly flavoured with notes of mocha, freshly unearthed beetroot, leather, dried herbs, cloves, black fruits, beef stock and mulberries. Good balance and intensity through to fine, firm tannins. It is perhaps a little chunky on the finish at this early stage, but should be better in two to three years and then drink impressively over the next ten to fifteen years, during which, it would be no surprise to see the score go a little higher. Drink to 2041.

The Glaetzer family has been a part Barossa’s viticultural history since 1888, and Ben Glaetzer produces some of the most recognised wines of the region from dry-grown vineyards in the Ebenezer area. Working with a small group of third and fourth generation growers, his rich, intense and expressive wines are for many the epitome of Barossa in the glass.

Anaperenna is a full-bodied and opulently fruited blend of Shiraz and Cabernet Sauvignon named after Anna Perenna, the Roman goddess of the New Year, with the label featuring the Egyptian symbol Ankh, standing for sunrise, regeneration and renewal.

The 2023 season in Barossa was long, dry and warm without any heat wave events, resulting in wines of great colour and balanced, intense flavours. The Anaperenna from this year is a 86/14 Ebenezer subregion blend of fruit from 30- to 100-year-old Shiraz and 30 to 130-year-old Cabernet Sauvignon.

The fruit was fermented in one- and two-tonne open fermenters which were hand plunged three times a day, with the wine maturing for 16 months in all-new oak hogshead barrels of which 92% were French and the balance of American origin.
