2023 Glaetzer Bishop Shiraz, Barossa Valley

This is a highly distinctive Shiraz from the Ebenezer sub-region of the Northern Barossa Valley. The vines are between 35 and 120 years old, so once again, as with these Glaetzer wines, some serious, deeply intense fruit has gone into the wine. The aroma is intense, with plum and blackberry combinations working alongside a little spicy pepperiness and a faint ironstone character. The palate retains energy and vibrancy with deeper, darker fruits, a little dollop of chocolate emerging before carrying through to a very long finish. You’re getting a serious bang for your buck with a wine like this, which can cellar for up to 15 years and won’t cost the earth. Drink to 2041.

Cracking Shiraz from the Ebenezer sub-region in the Barossa Valley, the vines which provided the fruit ranged in age between 35 and 120 years of age. The grapes underwent an extended maceration before maturation for sixteen months in French oak, 40% new and the remaining 60% two- to three-year-old hogsheads. Deep maroon with a blood red rim, the nose offers notes of plums, chocolate, hints of smoked meats, root vegetables and blackberries, with subtle oak integration. There is a slight dusting of cocoa powder as well. The wine exhibits good focus through to fine powdery tannins and the balance is never out of kilter. The palate sees the emergence of more chocolate notes. A lovely style which will provide pleasure for the next ten to twelve years. Drink to 2038.

Dark red and youthful in the glass. Lifted aromas of plum, mulberry, sweet spice, earth and dried herbs. Dark fruited, full-flavoured and mouth-filling, with a drive of juicy fruit, oak, spice and firm, granular tannins. Smart length, drinkability and shape. Drink to 2036.

The Glaetzer family has been a part Barossa’s viticultural history since 1888, and Ben Glaetzer produces some of the most recognised wines of the region from dry-grown vineyards in the Ebenezer area. Working with a small group of third and fourth generation growers, his rich, intense and expressive wines are for many the epitome of Barossa in the glass.

The 2023 season in Barossa was long, dry and warm without any heat wave events, resulting in wines of great colour and balanced, intense flavours. The Bishop from this year is Ebenezer fruit from 35- to 120-year-old Shiraz vines fermented in one- and two-tonne open fermenters with extended maceration, matured for 16 months in French oak hogshead barrels of which 40% were new.

Approachable now, this would have the capacity to cellar for several years in a cool, dark spot.
