An excellent dark garnet hue; fragrant, as you’d expect, with florals, warm spices, tobacco and bay leaves, loads of cassis and barely ripe blackcurrants. Acidity seems to be driving this, although tannins certainly back up the seemingly leaner palate. This needs food and a decent decant to see it at its best.

From the heart of Wilyabrup in Margaret River comes a Cabernet Sauvignon that reflects both regional pedigree and single block precision. Hay Shed Hill was established in 1973, making it one of the earlier vineyards planted in the region, and today the estate is owned and led by the Miles family with winemaker Michael Kerr at the helm. Block 2 is a carefully selected parcel planted on classic gravelly loam over clay, soils that have helped define Margaret River Cabernet on the world stage. The maritime influence of the Indian Ocean provides warm days and cooling afternoon breezes, allowing slow, even ripening and the development of fine tannins and vibrant acidity.

Deep crimson with inky purple edges, the aromatics are layered and expressive. Blackcurrant, dark plum and mulberry rise from the glass, joined by bay leaf, dried herbs and subtle cedar. There is a graphite and mineral thread running through the bouquet that speaks clearly of the Wilyabrup terroir.

On the palate it is medium to full bodied and beautifully structured. Concentrated dark berry fruit forms the core, framed by firm, finely grained tannins and balanced natural acidity. Notes of cassis, tobacco leaf and gentle oak build through the mid palate, leading to a long, savoury finish marked by dark chocolate and spice. It captures the elegance and power that have made Margaret River Cabernet Sauvignon internationally respected.

Pair with rare roast beef, grilled lamb cutlets, venison or aged cheddar. While impressive now with careful decanting, this Block 2 Cabernet will cellar confidently for fifteen to twenty years, developing further cedar, earthy complexity and seamless integration.
