From vines around 30 years old; native-yeast ferment with 20% whole bunches; matured in French oak (20% new) for 10 months. This is the most compressed of the Australian pinot trio, playing a little more savoury presently. Sour cherries, cranberries, lightly earthy with brown spices, the tannins reinforcing the savoury impression. Like the other two wines in this release, that balance of refined fruit purity and natural structure is artfully handled, the extraction à point. This just needs a little longer to show all its charms.

The Jane Eyre Pinot Noir from the Yarra Valley is a graceful, small-batch wine that reflects both the elegance of the region and the distinctive touch of one of Australia’s most admired micro-negociant winemakers. Jane Eyre began her career as a Melbourne hairdresser before following her passion for wine to Burgundy, where she trained under some of the region’s greats. She now splits her time between France and Australia, crafting Pinot Noir that is refined, terroir-driven and expressive of place. In the Yarra Valley, she sources fruit from select cool-climate vineyards with elevated sites and volcanic or clay loam soils, perfectly suited to Pinot Noir’s delicacy.

In the glass, it is bright ruby red. The bouquet is perfumed and inviting, with red cherry, raspberry and cranberry lifted by notes of rose petal, spice and a touch of forest floor. The palate is silky and medium-bodied, showing vibrant red fruit flavours woven with savoury herbs, subtle oak and fine, chalky tannins. A line of refreshing acidity gives length and balance, finishing elegant and persistent with hints of earth and spice.

Food pairings are classic Pinot territory: roast duck with orange, mushroom risotto, grilled salmon, or a simple roast chicken with thyme. It also pairs beautifully with charcuterie and soft cheeses. While highly enjoyable in youth, it has 8 to 10 years of cellaring potential, during which it develops more savoury depth, truffle notes and silky texture.
