2023 Kalleske Eduard Old Vine Shiraz, Barossa Valley

The Eduard is sourced from the dry-grown 1905 ‘Eduard’ block, 1961 ‘Ronin’ block, 1971 ‘Triangle’ block and the 1973 ‘Hay Rack’ block on the Kalleske estate. Blackberry, black cherry and blueberry fruits with a touch of blackcurrant pastille. Deeply etched with dark spice, cloves, mace, cold tea, licorice, dark chocolate, olive tapenade and crushed rock. Fairly broody on the palate with some meaty facets, fine, sandy tannins and a wash of graphite and cold dust on the fade out. Drink to 2045.

Eduard Kalleske was one of the four children Johann and Johanne Kalleske, founders of their namesake Barossa farm. Eduard and his wife Rosina worked the newly established vineyards until their sons took over in the 1880s.

The wine named after him is a selection of old vine Shiraz parcels across the Kalleske property with vines planted from 1905 to 1973. The 2023 vintage hails from an idal season: a wet and cool spring followed by a warm and dry summer and a cool, prolonged autumn. Yields were good, and quality excellent across the board.

The destemmed fruit was fermented with indigenous yeasts in open-top fermenters. Total time on skins was 9-12 days, with manual pump overs twice daily. The wine was basket pressed and racked into a combination of American and French oak hogsheads, of which half were new. It completed alcoholic and malolactic fermentation in these and was allowed a 24-month maturation prior to bottling.

About Kalleske

Johann Georg Kalleske and his family arrived in South Australia from Prussia in 1838. Settling at Greenock in the North-Western Barossa in 1853, the first vines were planted on the family’s Moppa property in 1875. 

Today, the now certified organic and biodynamic property continues to be a diverse and thriving mix of vineyards, sheep, cattle, chaff mill and winery, with all aspects managed by the family. The previously sold grapes have been bottled under the family name since 2002, with an increasingly diverse offer from Troy Kalleske drawing on the rich material available from the 48-hectare vineyards.
