2024 Kalleske Greenock Shiraz, Barossa Valley

The 2024 Kalleske Greenock Shiraz pours a deep, inky black, with the glass unable to contain the dark fruited Shiraz aromas: rich and ripe plum, layers of sweet and savoury spice, cocoa powder, treacle and subtle earthy notes. Strong and full-bodied, the palate is saturated with waves of deep, sweet fruit, the fine but prominent tannins providing welcome dryness and structure. Assertive, muscular and unmistakably Barossan.

It’s a wine that invites slow sipping, big hearty food, and deep conversation that lasts well into the evening. Great with lamb shoulder Asado cooked over coals and served with a rich chimichurri.

The fruit for this single vineyard wine was grown on a north-facing slope of red loam over deep red clays at 250 to 265 metre elevation. The site is located two kilometres south of the town of Greenock and was planted 27 years ago with a selection cuttings from Kalleske’s old Moppa vines planted in 18745, 1905 and 1961.

The 2024 was an excellent, dry and warm season. The grapes were de-stemmed into open top fermenters, with the warm ferment pumped over by hand twice daily. After eight days on skins, the juice was pressed into American and French oak hogsheads, of which a third were new. Having finished primary fermentation and malolactic conversion in the barrels, the wine was further matured for nineteen months.

About Kalleske

Johann Georg Kalleske and his family arrived in South Australia from Prussia in 1838. Settling at Greenock in the North-Western Barossa in 1853, the first vines were planted on the family’s Moppa property in 1875. 

Today, the now certified organic and biodynamic property continues to be a diverse and thriving mix of vineyards, sheep, cattle, chaff mill and winery, with all aspects managed by the family. The previously sold grapes have been bottled under the family name since 2002, with an increasingly diverse offer from Troy Kalleske drawing on the rich material available from the 48-hectare vineyards.
