Kalleske Greenock Shiraz is a bold, deeply expressive organic red from one of the Barossa Valley’s oldest and most sustainably focused winegrowing families. The Kalleske family has been farming in the Barossa since 1853 and today runs their vineyards in Greenock under certified organic and biodynamic practices. The Greenock Shiraz is drawn exclusively from their estate vineyard, located on the western ridge of the Barossa where the soils are shallow, red clay over shale and ironstone — perfect for producing intensely flavoured but balanced Shiraz.
Troy Kalleske, the winemaker, is known for his intuitive, low-intervention approach in the winery, allowing the site and vintage to speak clearly. The fruit for Greenock is handpicked and fermented using wild yeasts in small open-top fermenters. The wine is basket-pressed and matured in a mix of new and seasoned American and French oak hogsheads for around 18 months. Every step is done with a commitment to detail, energy and sustainability.
In the glass, this Shiraz is dark and concentrated with lifted aromas of blackberry, dark plum, licorice, cocoa and sweet spice, layered with notes of cedar, black pepper and ironstone. The palate is full-bodied but finely structured, with plush tannins and a long, persistent finish. There’s richness and generosity, but also balance and a touch of earthiness that grounds the wine in its Greenock origins.
Perfect with slow-braised beef cheeks, chargrilled ribeye, or a rich mushroom and black garlic pie. While approachable in its youth, this wine has the depth and structure to age gracefully for 10 to 15 years.
