From foudre. This one had finished fermenting. Mid lemon yellow a mix of apples and pears on the nose. More generous than usual but still with its more typical white fruit with some minerals. Fine length.

Picked 10 days later than the first vines, the 2023 MâconMilly-Lamartine has a slightly waxy-scented bouquet with hints of peach skin. The palate is well balanced with a pleasing fatness, though it needs just a little more tension to develop on the finish.

Les Héritiers du Comte Lafon Mâcon-Milly-Lamartine is a beautifully fresh and finely structured white Burgundy that reflects the purity and finesse of Chardonnay grown in the cooler, limestone-rich hills of southern Burgundy. This wine comes from organically and biodynamically farmed vineyards around the village of Milly-Lamartine, where altitude and exposure help preserve natural acidity and bring a racy, mineral edge to the fruit.

Winemaking at Les Héritiers du Comte Lafon is rooted in traditional Burgundian practices, with fermentation carried out using indigenous yeasts in a mix of large neutral oak foudres and stainless steel. Ageing on fine lees adds texture and complexity, but the style remains clean, focused and expressive of place rather than oak.

The nose is aromatic and lifted, showing white flowers, lemon zest, green apple and wet stone. On the palate, it is medium bodied with crisp acidity, citrus and orchard fruit at the core, and a long, mouthwatering finish with a touch of chalky minerality. This wine offers clarity and energy, with a real sense of terroir.

Food pairing: perfect with grilled fish, roast chicken, fresh chèvre, seafood pasta or lightly spiced vegetable dishes. Also excellent with creamy mushroom risotto or herbed polenta.

Cellar potential: best enjoyed in its first 5 to 7 years to capture its freshness and vitality, though it can gain nutty and savoury depth with age.
